Re-appropriation and Representation

Drawing On: Re-appropriation and Representation will document the results of a collaboration between Drawing On and a symposium of the same name, organised by the Architecture by Design community at the University of Edinburgh. It will explore design as a dynamic field of play, in which the dialogue between re-appropriation and representation represents a critical research question. See the Call for Submissions for details.

Architecture Design Research

Drawing On: Architecture Design Research launched on 3rd October, 2019. It presents work from selected contributions to the first Annual Design Research Conference, held in Sydney in September 2018. This partial, representative survey of Australasian architectural research by design practices offered authors an opportunity to further inquiries first presented at that event. These inquiries question established categorisations of design research, framing issues which inevitably converge around representation, and articulated through a range of media. The issue puts forward the idea that working by or through design already entails knowledge of and research into and for design.

Surface and Installation

Drawing On: Surface and Installation launched in March 2018. Contributions responded to the provocation that surfacing and installing —and recording surfaces and installations— as related but distinct practices are key design-research methods, engaging both drawing in and between worlds and the world. As a prelude to this issue, and as a means of entering into questions of surface and installation, Drawing On: Surface and Installation hosts a record of a conversation between Alexander Brodsky, Mark Dorrian and Richard Anderson.

Presents

Drawing On: Presents was released in September 2015. It contains contributions from researchers undertaking long-term research projects and from emerging practitioners and students engaged in periods of intense study. These contributions either present work undertaken as part of an ongoing design-research enquiry or present reflections on design as a research methodology.
